FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
The Pikler triangle was designed by Dr. Emmi Pikler (1902 -1984) to give kids the opportunity to climb at their own pace, learn to control their movements, and discover their own body’s limits. This can be done in a safe environment at home – when playing outdoors is not possible or not preferable.
Our version of the triangle is very similar to the original, but we’ve made two important additional features for it, in order to better adapt it to the pace and needs of contemporary families. The first new feature is that we’ve made it foldable: its two legs can be folded with ease for storage and transportation. And the second difference is that we make our triangles bigger than the original and have them in different sizes; this way a wider age-range of children can take advantage of Emmi Pikler’s innovative design, and therefore serve the purpose of giving children the means to develop their gross motor skills indoors in a practical manner.
It’s a terrific piece that satisfies the enthusiastic little climber who takes over your baby around the 8th month of life and who, by the way, will remain in control pretty much all childhood!
We encourage you to read through the detailed descriptions for each unit size to determine the best option for your little one. However, our average recommendations are as follows:
SMALL: Suitable for ages 1-2, weight 18-26 lbs.
MEDIUM: Ideal for ages 3-4, weight 27-35 lbs.
LARGE: Best for ages 5-6, weight 36-75 lbs.
Bear in mind that the weight varies from unit to unit because of wood that contains more moisture. These weight recommendations include one standard ramp attached to the triangle.
We often hear, "I have a 6-month-old and a 4-year-old. Now what?" Like most great solutions, the answer is a simple one.
We recommend the Medium (Intermediate) Triangle. Babies as young as 6-8 months can pull to stand using the rungs and children as old as 4 and 5 can climb to the topmost point, continuing to learn new skills and develop their proprioceptive control in a creative way that also fosters a sense of imagination. In fact, the wooden rungs can even be used to attach play bar accessories for sensory development immediately from birth - so future siblings will be able to use it as soon as they arrive.
As the Intermediate Triangle is just under a yard from the ground, and as babies and toddlers will only get that high when they are ready, the need for parental heart palpitations is kept to a minimum while keeping your older child challenged for roughly a year.
You can also check out our new Extension Boot! For families with children at different phases of development, the Extension Boot can be inserted and removed by a supervising adult to raise and lower the triangle, making it easy to accommate the skills of each little adventurer.
At this time, the Pickler Workshop climbing triangles are sold as is. If you would like our recommendations for child-safe paints, stains, or varnishes, we would be happy to assist you upon purchase. If you have other special requests, please send us a message and we will accommodate your needs if at all possible!
